It sounded too good to be true when I heard Call of Duty 2 is being ported to Pocket PC and, sure enough, it was. The graphics were okay considering it's built for a mobile device. But that's not the point. There is virtually none of the defining moments and scenes in the game that depicted the original Call of Duty 2scenes where Stukas and Spitfires duking it out overhead as you hoof it on the ground moments where McGreigor screams his head off when you confront a Tiger rolling down the street to destroy you and the truck fights where your fellow comrades and the enemy soldiers will yell out to their friends level endings involving a spectacular offshore bombardments tasks such as climbing up the cliff on a rope while under hectic situation. The feeling of a living and breathing battlefield just isn't there. Textures looked pretty plain and boring, and sometimes downright repetitive. The AI wasn't anything to brag about, either. Other than their pre-scripted waypoints, which is just one per soldier, they did not move at all but to shoot, crouch and reload. No moving from place to place to take cover or dodging bullets and grenades. And the biggest disappointment of all the lack of missions where you are given special tasks such as sniper hunting and tank commandeering. They do not exist. The missions are plain and simple find and destroy or use a device such as a radio or an explosive. You kill everyone in your way and get to the designated area and the mission will end. No interesting dialogues between your friends, just a sad blacking out screen that will transport you to the next mission. In fact, a lot of interesting missions were cut out, such as the missions where you have to commandeer a Crusader tank in the original Call of Duty 2. And I'm guessing that a lot of people will be trying to counter my review saying how Pocket PC lacks the muscle to pull all that off. Well, the funny thing was that I had my x51v set on Power-Save (206MHz) mode and the thing still ran like a charm. I'm sure that it wouldn't have hurt them so badly to pack extra stuff in the game to make it look more pretty, but they opted not to just to satisfy people who are still stuck with Pocket PCs from years back. What a pity. I would have been willing to trade off extra storage space for all, or nearly all, goodies from the original Call of Duty 2 to be crammed in. (The game isn't even 30MB installed. Seriously, I would have been happier to have a 300MB game that's packed and loaded than to have a 30MB game that has almost everything cut out of the original) Sound effect was also repetitive. No dialogues. Same three dying sounds for every soldiers, let it be American, British, Russian or German. Same footstep noise. Same explosionsNot much in the way of variety. The controls, amazingly, wasn't bad. In fact, it was quite easy to figure out and adjust. Many of the keys are already mapped with the device buttons, and those that do not have are assigned with onscreen buttons. Cliché. Loading time was a breeze, even under the Power-Save mode. In fact, the game loads the level maps in segments on-the-fly, and it takes less than a second to load each one of them. I did encounter one glitch with the v1.0 Gold version. Whenever I had my x51v plugged into the cradle with ActiveSync running, the game sometimes refused to start or would start but freeze upon starting a mission or entering the configuration screen. (Just as a reference, I have an Axim x51v with 128MB of system RAM running the new A12 WM5 ROM) Considering all those statements above, this game doesn't even fall under the level that Call of Duty series are in. It's rather a lot more like Medal of Honor. For me, and perhaps to many of the diehard Call of Duty fans who crave for action, this was largely an overhyped game that just couldn't deliver. So is this game worth USD$30 for you? ($30 for the PC-CD and $25 for direct download) It really depends. If you are someone who don't use your Pocket PC to play games on the go, don't bother. Please, save that money and get the original game for the PC. If you are someone who are heavily dependant on Pocket PC for doing just about everything for you, including gaming, it might or might not be worth $30 depending on your taste. But the important point is that, if you were expecting this game to be as good as Call of Duty 2 for PC, don't be surprised to find out that it's not as good as the original game.
